Microsoft built its own coding model — and aimed it at Claude Code
Verdict: Try it this week (if you live in Copilot).
Microsoft introduced MAI-Code-1-Flash, its first in-house coding model, rolling out to GitHub Copilot users in VS Code today. Scores 51.2% on SWE-Bench Pro vs 35.2% for Claude Haiku 4.5, with up to 60% fewer tokens on SWE-Bench Verified. Trained March–May 2026 on production Copilot harnesses, pointed straight at agentic coding where Claude Code dominates. Ship it? Flip the model picker, run it on a real ticket, watch the token count. Switch when the bill and diffs agree — not on a benchmark.
